Driver Education Theory (Online)

MASD schedules all grade 10 students for this online course.  Students are scheduled within the semester closest to their 16th birthday.  Parents and Guardians may opt their student out of this course by notifying their child's counselor prior to the start of the semester for which they are scheduled.


This course covers a wide range of issues pertinent to safe driving practices and the responsibilities an individual must assume when operating an automobile on public highways. The program is designed to help novice drivers develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to become safe, low-risk, and responsible drivers. The course begins with an overview of the driving tasks and skills needed to navigate the complex highway transportation system and the responsibilities involved in obtaining a driver’s license and becoming a safe driver. It then teaches the concepts and basic maneuvers necessary to develop the physical skills of driving. This sequence puts students behind the wheel, prepared to develop the necessary mental skills and attitudes for low-risk driving. The course topics include: Highway Transportation System / Licensing / Signs, Signals and Roadway Markings / Vehicle Controls / IPDE Process / Turnabouts / Parking / Right of Way Laws / Driving in Different Environments / Sharing the Road / Buying and Insuring a Vehicle / Drinking and Driving / Distracted Driving / Drugged Driving / Drowsy Driving / Road Rage.
