Child Development I
7200 Grades 9-12 1 Credit 1 Semester Weight of 1.0
The child development sequence is extremely valuable for the student who is interested in children or in pursuing a career in working with young children. The main focus of study in this course is the growth and development of children from birth to 3 years old. Learners will learn about developmental milestones, teaching strategies, and methodologies for teaching young children. Students who successfully complete this course will become eligible for an experience in Early Childhood Education Lab (Child Development 2 and Child Development 3).
Child Development II
7220 Grades 10-12 1 Credit 1 Semester Weight of 1.1
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Child Development I.
In this level of study, the student prepares to become the preschool teacher. This course covers the concepts of developing guidance skills and the importance of play in the preschool curriculum. Students will learn how to plan and prepare instructional activities for the preschool children. Students taking this class will determine the philosophy and goals for the upcoming preschool program. This course will provide the student with practical experience in their role as the preschool teacher. Students will implement planned and prepared instructional activities as a part of the preschool curriculum in our preschool program. They will further develop observational skills by watching and interacting with the preschool child, complete an assessment on a preschool child and participate in a preschool parent-teacher conference.
Child Development III
7240 Grades 11-12 1 Credit 1 Semester Weight of 1.2
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Child Development II.
In this course, the student will become aware of Infant/Toddler programs, gain an understanding of what is involved in obtaining the CDA credential by completing a Resource File Portfolio as it applies to his/her experiences in early childhood, study the academic standards for Pre-K and Kindergarten, and confirm prior knowledge as it relates to developmentally appropriate practices and preschool curriculum. The student will develop and write curriculum for his/her role as Teacher of the Week in the preschool program, complete a case study and assessment on a preschool child.
Food Foundations
7250 Grades 9-12 1 Credit 1 Semester Weight of 1.0
Students in Food Foundations will learn basics of food preparation including safety and sanitation, knife skills, and basic preparation techniques for a variety of food groups. Nutritional information includes My Plate and the benefits of following a balanced diet. This course includes many students selected hands on culinary labs.
Advanced Foods
7270 Grades 10-12 1 Credit 1 Semester Weight of 1.1
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Food Foundations.
Students in Advanced Foods continue to focus on current nutritional topics and build their food lab experiences. Throughout the year, students plan and prepare more creative and advanced dishes concentrating on the presentation of food.
Fashion Design
7290 Grades 9-12 1 Credit 1 Semester Weight of 1.1
For students who are interested in every aspect of the clothing industry, check this out! Students taking this course will become familiar with the fashion cycle, basic fashion terms and the evolution of the fashion industry. The students will explore design principles, color schemes and elements of design. They will become familiar with many famous fashion designers from both the past and present.
Each student will learn to operate a sewing machine and serger. They will also complete a small sewing project as well as constructing a garment utilizing a commercial pattern that reflects his/her personal style and the elements and principles of design.
Interior Design
7295 Grades 9-12 1 Credit 1 Semester Weight of 1.1
This course will introduce students to the fundamental principles of interior design. Students will learn to create an impact on an environment using color, fabrics and textures. Instruction includes using color effectively, using the elements and principles of design, textiles, arranging furniture, floor planning, and finishing details. Hands-on projects will allow students to build and implement their design skills.
Advanced Textiles And Design
7305 Grades 10-12 1 Credit 1 Semester Weight of 1.2
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Fashion Design &/or Interior Design
This course builds on skills learned in Fashion Design and Interior Design and enables students to further explore their creativity in these fields. Students will become experienced with color concepts, design elements and principles, textile uses, and the design process. Projects are integrated throughout the course to provide students with hands on application as they explore: careers, apply the elements and principles of design, fiber characteristics, basic sewing construction, design development, design technology, universal design, visual merchandizing, sustainability, and professional communication and presentation. Students will have the opportunity to choose projects geared more to the fashion or interior design industry.
The Global Kitchen
7310 Grades 9-12 .5 Credit 1 Semester
Students will explore a variety of culinary techniques and ingredients use to prepare authentic cuisines from other cultures, while continuing to develop knife skills and food preparation methods.
Adulting 101
7400 Grades 9-12 .5 Credit 1 Semester
Do you want to learn valuable skills to become more independent and/or live on your own? If your answer is yes, then this course is for you! Students taking this course will learn how to manage money, manage stress, communicate effectively, plan and prepare a nutritious meal and apartment living. The aim of this course is for the student to develop skills that are necessary for independent living.
Child Development Independent Study
7406 Grades 9-12 .25 Credit 1 Semester
Students wanting to guide children through their formative years may participate in the senior high preschool program as a teacher’s aide. Students will work closely with the preschool children during activities that are planned by the classroom teacher and the students who are enrolled in Child Development III. This opportunity is offered during the second semester when the preschool program is in session. A pass/fail grade is given.
